    Your location: Germany

    Age (If you want): 31 (well, 32 in less than a month :P)

    How Primal are you: Started "seriously" just 3 months ago; been gathering information and chewing it for a couple of years, though. I'm primal most of the time, although maybe once a month I have a piece of home-made cake (at least I know it has real butter...). Good thing is that after that piece I don't feel temped for another 4 weeks, so it could be worse!

    Do you consume dairy: Yes, hard cheese and full fat greek yogourt

    Do you drink coffee or tea: Herbal tea, the minimal amount of caffeine puts me on hummingbird mode!

    Motivator for switching to Primal: Just wanted to improve my overall health (and look a bit better on the proccess, lets be honest about it!)

    Favorite exercise: Anything that involves mad no-rules play (calvin-ball, anyone?)

    Favorite Primal food: Any protein (usually steak or grilled wild salmon) with vegetables (sprin onions, garlic, a bit of fresh ginger, courgettes, aubergine, peppers, cabbage, spinach... whatever is in the fridge!) sauteÚd in olive oil with some avocado.

    Best part about being Primal: The energy!

    Worst part about being Primal: facing the lunch options at work.

      How Primal are you: I'd say 90-95%

      Do you consume dairy: Very rarely

      Do you drink coffee or tea: Coffee and Tea both

      Motivator for switching to Primal: more energy, reduce body fat, mental health

      Favorite exercise: Running or biking, although I am somewhat of a gym rat and enjoy free weights. Also thinking about getting in to Yoga once or twice a week.

      Favorite Primal food: A good steak and eggs will do it for me every time!

      Best part about being Primal: Feeling good about what I eat, energy levels thru the roof, being healthy in general has got me feeling great.

      Worst part about being Primal: I have the occassional craving for some non primal foods, I try not to lose focus but it gets hard! When this happens, I buy the best cut of meat possible and all those cravings go away.

        How Primal are you: I'm going for the 80/20 but do better than that most of the time.

        Do you consume dairy: Low temp pasteurized local grass-fed half and half (daily), raw cheese rarely. Combine the two and have blue cheese dressing! Really wish I had access to raw milk.

        Do you drink coffee or tea: Coffee. Three cups a day before 10am. Trying to cut down to two.

        Motivator for switching to Primal: Just made sense after being on every diet under the sun.

        Favorite exercise: Body Combat gym class

        Favorite Primal food: Eggs & avocado

        Best part about being Primal: It's so intuitive I can lose weight without trying.

        Worst part about being Primal: Dealing with eye-rolls from people who don't have any idea what they are talking about (I'm looking at you Mom!). Occasional self-doubt.

          Motivator for switching to Primal: I was diagnosed with Spinocerabellar Ataxia Type 1 eight years ago. SCA1 is a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to control motor functions. Learning to function in a wheelchair seems to be the goal of a lot of SCA sufferers. Not me! My goal is to not need one. Going Primal seems to be a good step toward that goal.

          Favorite exercise: Gazelle Glider

          Favorite Primal food: Steak

          Best part about being Primal: Brand new at it but I feel like I'm doing something life changing.

          Worst part about being Primal: I live in New Hampshire and I'm not sure but I think it might be against the law to not eat ice cream

                Motivator for switching to Primal: Getting rid of inflammation and joint pain

                Favorite exercise: Handstands, prowler push, power snatch, power clean

                Favorite Primal food: Everything! I love to cook!

                Best part about being Primal: Losing 50lbs isn't bad, but getting rid of pain, asthma and allergies is pretty awesome.

                Worst part about being Primal: I do miss ice cream and desserts at restaurants... sometimes...

                  How Primal are you: six days in and 100% at least for as much as i know or understand presently as I am doing the 21 day transformation

                  Do you consume dairy: no except the tiniest bit of Parmesan on salads

                  Do you drink coffee or tea: no coffee, black and green tea

                  Motivator for switching to Primal: observing the results in some close friends and a desire and drive to live longer and healthier!

                  Favorite exercise: doing Mark's primal exercises, running and walking (still lots to learn)

                  Favorite Primal food: Mmmmm gotta be avocados, not really ever been a big meat eater so wondering how that will pan out, whether I will begin to enjoy it more

                  Best part about being Primal: Not sure yet, ask me in another two weeks! Maybe right now it's the optimism and potential of the journey

                  Worst part about being Primal: Some early detox headaches, but I guess that's par for the course. Otherwise feeling good

                    I'm happy to have found this site. It seems like a goldmine for knowledge, and a nice place for like-minded folk to gather and discuss.

                    To answer the OP's inquiries:

                    I'm not sure how to answer 'How primal' I am...

                    I just turned 30. I've always been a lover of fruits and veggies, and a generally healthy eater. [Thanks dad!] However, I have definitely eaten lots of grains/breads/pastas in my life. I've never really been a junk food purchaser though, or soda, etc. I have memories from the early 90's of my dad saying "We aren't buying hotdogs or Kraft Macaroni. It'll make you sick!" Recently, my father (who is a really healthy non-average American), got into intellectual debate with me about what I've learned about Paleolithic lifestyle, vs. Mediterranean lifestyle diets. I don't know anyone who believes totally in this lifestyle, or who lives it.

                    So, here I am.

                    For about 1 month now, I've been trying to reduce my intake of grains. That's been the hardest part for me, as I ADORE rye bread. I could eat that every day with some really good cheeses like Swiss, or Gouda.

                    I've reduced my dairy too. That part hasn't been too hard, since I don't like drinking milk. I guess it actually has been difficult to quit cheese and yogurt. I've done this gradual tapering actually. I always buy organic dairy, by the way. In the morning, I have a little organic half-and-half with my coffee, sans sugar, of course. I absolutely still drink teas, and won't ever stop that.

                    My motivator for switching has sort of happened by, happenstance! haha I was recently worried (after eating mostly vegetarian for the majority of the previous year), about the possibility of protein deficiency. Also, I get skin breakouts, and someone told me that they heard peanuts could be a problem for some skin-types. At the time, I discarded the idea as a quackery like comment from the obtusely airy health food store cashier. Long story short: After doing the research about the various types of healthy diets, and the schools of though behind them, I stumbled upon an article about peanuts (and legumes)! It led me to paleo! So, that's also why I'm here now.

                    My favorite primal food? I don't know how we can pick just one! I love so many things. Mostly plant based things, though I certainly love meat and fish. I'm sorry to my poor body that I deprived myself of meat for so long. I consumed too much soy, I believe.

                    During survival mode, if the whole society collapsed, who would live longer? A hunter? Or a rigid vegetarian? I think we know the answer to that. The vegetarian would quickly convert to carnivore.

                    The hardest thing I've experienced, is worrying about: "How am I ever going to eat pizza again?!!!!!"

                    I read something about making a dough with almond flour, and chickpea flower though. (yes, yes, I know, TRUE paleo says NO BEANS! ugh. lol)

                    I'm still going to be seeking more science behind the 'anti-bean logic'. I thought that consumption of proteins WITH phytic acids, reduced the 'anti-nutrient' effect that is claimed.

                    Okay, enough of my rambling now. ha.

                    I look forward to learning things from Mark, and all the people here.

                      How Primal are you:75% but moving up.

                      Do you consume dairy:Some cottage cheese , some cheese

                      Do you drink coffee or tea: Yes 2-4 cups of coffee a day

                      Motivator for switching to Primal:Weight,wanting to be able to be around and keep up with my 2 yr old son for the long haul

                      Favorite exercise: Not sure just started the PBE Mark uses in the book. Plank,push ups, squats, yet to try pull ups

                      Favorite Primal food: Meat,Bacon,Eggs,Veggies

                      Best part about being Primal:Seeing the radical change and weight loss just from changed eating habits. Can not wait to see results in another month after getting closer to 90 % primal eating with exercising added in. Lost about 20-25 lbs on diet change alone in 2 1/2 months. Feel and weigh the best I have ever or atleast since my early 20's.

                      Worst part about being Primal:Convenience at times with being able to find/afford foods within PBP criteria. I'm sure I'll hone my locating abilities in time to make this non-issue.

                        I'm a 46 year old health practitioner specialising in Structural Integration and many other forms of bodywork

                        Been high fat, low carb for years, love it!

                        drink tea, not coffee, eat full fat cream and stuff from grass fed dairy cattle, great source available daily

                        favourite exercise is kettlebells and plyometrics but I love tai chi and qi gung too - all done barefoot

                        best part is saying young looking and feeling, boundless energy and all that good stuff

                        I'm a big guy but am lean despite eating loads of really nice food, great veggies, juices and smoothies, loads of eggs (again got a great source through a church, really cheap organic eggs) and grass fed beef from organic farms in Wiltshire

                        worst thing is seeing my clients suffering from CW advice from the National Health Service - diabetics being told to eat bread and so on, gets me down

                          Age (If you want):33

                          How Primal are you:50% - I'm having a lot of trouble sticking to the plan, which is why I thought I'd try to join the community here - for support.

                          Do you consume dairy: I love real cheese (stinky, creamy, blue being my favorite)! It's a special occasion treat, but I always over do it.

                          Do you drink coffee or tea: 1-2 cups of coffee a day, usually with coconut milk but sometimes with half and half. I also drink herbal teas at night.

                          Motivator for switching to Primal: I gained SO MUCH WEIGHT during pregnancy and PPD and haven't been able to lose it.

                          Favorite exercise: I love to box and kickbox; I am a lawyer who graduated in 2008 - aka, I have a TON of debt and stress! - and punching and kicking things helps me with my anxiety and aggression...but I also love to hike and ride bikes with my family.

                          Favorite Primal food: Deviled eggs made with homemade mayo, grass fed bone-in steak, green beans

                          Best part about being Primal: It helps me control my rosecea naturally!

                          Worst part about being Primal: It's hard to stick to when I'm around my family - they are not supportive at all and in fact actively push SAD food on me. But it's the kind of SAD food that I love, homemade and nostalgia-inducing - mom's homemade chocolate chip cookies being the thing that got me tonight...sigh.

                          I am really looking for some support as I try to get closer to 100% primal. I get so motivated reading the success stories but am easily discouraged. It probably doesn't help that I am still on medication for my PPD and I also am a bit dependent on my evening glass(es) of red wine to relax. My lifestyle is crazy stressful right now (new gov't job, massively long commute, toddler, and husband who works in another city 3 days per week, don't know any people to socialize with here in NoVA, etc.) I also need advice on getting my toddler to eat things other than crackers and cheese!

                          Glad to "meet" you all and I look forward to interacting with fellow Grok/ettes, even if it is only over the interweb.


                          • woohoo, I used to live in Menands too (currently in Troy). Glad to hear of someone else in the area into Primal, as no one I know really cares much about this stuff =/

                            I've been paleo/primal on and off for a couple years now, and make effort to source most of my meat and eggs from a couple of the farms around here (Kinderhook Farm is awesome). I also get raw milk from a farm (Willow Marsh), but am currently experimenting with no dairy. I applaud you for doing primal while being so busy, most people I know would consider that way too much work. Your sheppard's pie recipe sounds yum, I'd love to give it a try if you want to toss it my way.

                              How Primal are you: Very, still I once in a while eat some corn bread when I'm eating olives.

                              Do you consume dairy: Sure do. Full fat milk, that for some stupid reason -family induced- I stopped drinking when my neighbour from where I bought my still warm straight from the cow milk was no longer able to keep the cow. Thankfully I'm back on the right track. Also love all these full fat cheeses I have in my country.

                              Do you drink coffee or tea: No coffee for me, for some reason my brain recognizes it as something really disgusting that I can't even stand the smell. I do like tea, but that's not something that I can say that I drink regularly.

                              Motivator for switching to Primal: Getting overweight and getting less self-esteem. A health conciousness also was added to the process.

                              Favorite exercise: I'll have to go with the dead-lift.

                              Favorite Primal food: A big grilled fresh fish.

                              Best part about being Primal: I feel healthier, more energetic as my self-esteem gets higher everyday.

                              Worst part about being Primal: When there are meals you can't control (parent's house, friend's house, etc...) that gets hard, or I'm lucky and I can select what I can want to eat among all food, or if not possible I'll end up eating something that's not too bad just to prevent me from getting too hungry.
                              Now I tend to eat something before those meeting so that I can be on the safe side.

                              My story starts one year ago.
                              My height is 1.79cm and I was over 82Kg, don't know how much since I didn't wanted to, still I don't think I ever got to 85Kg.
                              What got me to that was some very bad food choices and and couple of injuries that didn't allow to work out. Getting back to work out was getting back harder every due to the added weight.

                              So one year ago I accidentally read something about leangains and that it helped people getting fit just by adjusting meal frequency. As I investigated more about it and read a lot more about intermittent fasting, the plenty of variations and the studies results about it.

                              Amongst all these reading that I did I came across mark's daily apple and the primal blueprint.
                              After a few months following the leangains protocol and having lost already some weight (was at 78Kg) I started gradually to adjust to a primal living. Another 6Kg disappeared in another couple of month, so by summer time I was fit and self confident.

                              I haven't gone low carb by then. I was able to maintain my weight at around 72Kg, until christmas when my weight got up to 75Kg. That was more that enough to jump start my low carb diet. In a couple of weeks I managed to get back to my 72-73Kg range that I keep to date.

                              Now I keep my diet I protein, high fat (natural ), and low carbs most of which are non starchy.

                                How Primal are you: Mostly, just started making changes Feb 2013

                                Do you consume dairy: No, it really doesn't agree with me. Always had a problem with full fat dairy but now 99.9% fat free causes problems.

                                Do you drink coffee or tea: Do drink coffee, one cup per day, black, no sugar. Can't drink tea as I'm sensitive to sulfites and apparently they can be found in many teas and tea bags.

                                Motivator for switching to Primal: It just makes sense. I've battled with my weight for a few years now, mostly because I've been looking for a long term solution, something I know will enable me to manage my weight without having to rely on willpower for the rest of my life. I think primal is that solution.

                                Favorite exercise: Slow walks, enjoying the scenery - especially the blue sky days.

                                Favorite Primal food: Coconut anything! Unfortunately most coconut products come with added sulfites so I have to be careful.

                                Best part about being Primal: Not being hungry all the time and getting moody when I haven't been fed in a few hours. I don't need to stress if my meals are delayed for any reason and I can go for a long walk without having to take a snack with me or money to buy something in case I feel flat!

                                Worst part about being Primal: Listening to others complain about how sick they are when many of their ailments could be helped if they just ate better (=primal)! I try really hard not to 'preach' primal too much. I do make sure I tell people how much better I've been feeling lately though :-)
