  • Your location: Harlem, NYC

    Age (If you want): 49

How Primal are you: Hard to say. I crossed the low-carb border several years ago, but often relapsed. Each time, though, something else would stick. So, by now there are pretty much no starches in my diet and very little grain (except really good, bakery bread. I love that stuff!). I eat too much fruit and not enough vegetables, but SO much better than when I was 39...

Do you consume dairy: Butter and, occasionally, cream. I do miss milk sometimes

Do you drink coffee or tea: Tea, mostly iced

Motivator for switching to Primal: I'm 49 and feel like 109. Various joint aches and pains. The kicker was when I realized I was modifying my behaviour to accomodate declining abilities.

    Favorite exercise: Hmm...

Favorite Primal food: I haven't had a REAL steak in a while, but I do love a good one

Best part about being Primal: I'll get back to you. I'm hoping it'll be restored vitality and controlling my weight without having to be obsessed with food

Worst part about being Primal: I'll get back to you (probably lack of bread)

    • Ok, here I go...*splash*

      The Questions:

Your location: somewhere on the outskirts of Philadelphia

Age (If you want): 42 on the outside, 25 on the inside

How Primal are you: just started

Do you consume dairy: yes; love to cook with butter and I make fruit smoothies with kefir. Sometimes I just can't resist a nice cold glass of chocolate milk.

Do you drink coffee or tea: yes - with milk and a lump of sugar or stevia

Motivator for switching to Primal: looking to reduce the ill effects of a whacked out thyroid

      Favorite exercise: fencing, swimming, gardening

      Favorite Primal food: cow

Best part about being Primal: I feel better. Finally.

Worst part about being Primal: having to plan meals and snacks rather than grabbing whatever on the fly. I guess that's why they call it "discipline".

      • Your location: Australia

        Age (If you want): 23

How Primal are you: Just getting started

Do you consume dairy: Yes. I cook with butter and absolutely love greek yogurt.

Do you drink coffee or tea: I occasionally drink green tea.

Motivator for switching to Primal: Lose weight, gain strength. Get healthy!

        Favorite exercise: lovin' kettlebells!

Favorite Primal food: steak, seafood, a big fresh salad..

Best part about being Primal: i'll get back to you!

Worst part about being Primal: i'm sure i will miss the sweets!

        • Hey everyone!

          Your location: NYC

          Age (If you want): 22

How Primal are you: Just started about 1.5 weeks ago, but plan to be quite serious about it

Do you consume dairy: Though I love milk, I've restricted myself to 1 serving of dairy per day, which usually takes the form of Greek yogurt with breakfast

Do you drink coffee or tea: Kinda addicted to coffee, 2-4 cups per day. Would like this to change..

Motivator for switching to Primal: To lose weight, clear out my skin, and more generally, to just feel better about myself

Favorite exercise: Depends, but I love pick up soccer, biking, and lifting

Favorite Primal food: Really big, elaborate salads

Best part about being Primal: It's early, but I'd say that completely transforming the way I think about food, and being conscious of exactly how a food choice affects my body is a pretty cool feeling. Also, my workouts these past few days have been really awesome.

Worst part about being Primal: Turning down beer at $2 PBR night!

          • OK time for me to dive in after hanging around for a week or so.

            Your location:
            Northern VA (Burke)

            Age (If you want):

            How Primal are you:

            Do you consume dairy:
            Occasional cheese

Do you drink coffee or tea:
1 Cup black. Seems like I drink it less often now.

            Motivator for switching to Primal:
Tired of not being happy with my weight and not feeling 100%

            Favorite exercise:
Started crossfit the same time as primal. I'm just gonna say whatever the WOD is today is my favorite.

            Favorite Primal food:
Steak with its new friend avocado

            Best part about being Primal:
            Much more energy.

            Worst part about being Primal:
            I love beer.

            • Love the obligatory first post! The answers:

location: Denver, Colorado. I just moved back here after six months in New Mexico; front range since 1997.

Age (If you want): I still get carded, even though my chronological age is more than double the legal drinking age. It is an indication of a good genetic base that I hope PB will be able to exploit.

How Primal are you: I am only at the very beginning; chapter two of the book. I am phasing out the grains, increasing the proteins, and struggle with the idea of consuming high fat. Exercise is back in my life after a decade of corporate cube sedentary.

Do you consume dairy: I never was much of a fan, with the exception of cheese and my coffee must have half and half. The cheese I have cut back to a "flavoring" in salads, the half and half, organic.

Do you drink coffee or tea: Both. Coffee, moving towards organic 50/50 decaf mix. Tea, much and many cold and hot.

Motivator for switching to Primal: Two months ago I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and mild fatty liver disease. I immediately cut out the alcohol and got on a diet and exercise program. I used to be a long-distance cyclist in the mid 90's, and getting back on the bike for one to two hours per day while cutting out fatty foods and pumping up the carbs. I just did not feel like putting so much effort into it again. A friend pointed me to this site and thus it begins.

Favorite exercise: Road bike, hike, splitting wood, some free weights.

Favorite Primal food: Well since this has only just begun, and I am still struggling with the red fatty meats, I lean towards fish, chicken, and turkey. The friend who pointed me to this site challenged me to smoke a beef heart in my Big Green Egg. Maybe...

Best part about being Primal: not having to count calories or beat myself up on the road bike!

Worst part about being Primal: Still adjusting to the idea of giving up most awesome breads and eating bacon and butter. It seems so counter-intuitive!

              • Your location: Jacksonville, AR

                Age (If you want): 27

How Primal are you: 3/4s, gotta primalize the pantry

Do you consume dairy: Yes, in a protein shake

Do you drink coffee or tea: yes, not as much now

Motivator for switching to Primal: noticed a thickening around my waist and weight gain so I started working out, watching calories, when on another forum Texas.grok mentioned the Blueprint. Did some research and started by cutting carbs and upping protein. It's been a month and so far 12 pounds down in fat and 3 in lean muscle. Waistline smaller

Favorite exercise: plank, looks so easy yet so hard

Favorite Primal food: don't have one yet

Best part about being Primal: the leaner, more muscular figure. My fiancée isn't complaining

Worst part about being Primal: miss junk food

                • The Questions:

                  Your location: Greenville, SC

                  Age (If you want): 36

How Primal are you: 80% - more or less. I eat dairy and can't afford grass-fed meats, but buy organic whenever possible and avoid grains, legumes, cereals, etc.

                  Do you consume dairy: yes

Do you drink coffee or tea: both

Motivator for switching to Primal: lose weight and get healthier. I've been lifting and working out for years, but have a serious carb addiction that I want to beat.

                  Favorite exercise: hiking, strength training

Favorite Primal food: Beef, pork, chicken - I am a meat man

Best part about being Primal: Only here a week - started with a 24 hour water fast to "jump start" the system. Energy levels are good, carb cravings are reducing, weight is hovering...

Worst part about being Primal: Have to get back to you on that. I do miss my english muffin in the the mornings and Ice cream!

                  Starting Weight (July 2010) - 235
                  Goal Weight - 200
                  Current Weight - 216.8

                  • Your location: Cedar Park, TX (North Austin)

                    Age (If you want): 26

How Primal are you: Types of food, 95% due to weekly cheat meal. Quality of food 75% due to finances (or lack there-of)

Do you consume dairy: I guess yes because I do cook with butter at times or use a small amount of heavy cream in coffee and have no problem doing it. Otherwise, no (except cheat meal)

Do you drink coffee or tea: Yes, both, but before noon

Motivator for switching to Primal: Ease, science, and lifestyle approach. I'm a type A personality and all my previous approaches to eating were either flawed or were too easy to over regiment. I used to count every calorie, macronutrient, etc. It worked but when it takes 45 minutes to pack a lunch and some snacks something is wrong. Primal is just easy as long as you have the right food. It's also great to have the science to back it up. Lastly, I like that it's all about enjoying food and enjoying life. I can't say that I enjoyed food before because it was just so dang hard to do right.

Favorite exercise: CrossFit/Heavy lifting/gymnastics. Looking forward to starting PBF next week.

Favorite Primal food: Meat - particularly grass-fed when I can afford it. Oh, and avocado...and olive oil.. that's more than 1, whatever.

Best part about being Primal: The whole lifestyle approach and the ability to eat how we're supposed to with relative ease.

Worst part about being Primal: I'll be honest, I know grains, sugar, etc. are terrible for you but they still taste good to me. That's usually what I have on cheat meals. A lot of people say that after a while they lose their taste for that stuff. Not me, at least not yet. Maybe if I gave it up for more than a week at a time at one meal then it would happen. Hmmm.

All that being said, I'm glad to be on this Primal Journey with all of you!
                    Strength and Honor

                    • Your location: Ottawa, ON - Canada

                      Age (If you want): 29

How Primal are you: Mostly...slowly moving towards 100%.

Do you consume dairy: Not much...milk or cream in coffee and feta cheese in salad

Do you drink coffee or tea: Yes to both.

Motivator for switching to Primal: It just makes sense.

Favorite exercise: Deadlifts / sprinting / playing hockey

                      Favorite Primal food: Striploin steak.

Best part about being Primal: Not having any digestion issues or feeling tired after a meal.

Worst part about being Primal: Having to explain to people why I'm not eating bread, pasta, etc. - and that beer is not primal.

                      • Hey everybody my name is Josh, and PRIMAL is my favorite word.

Your location: Detroit, Michigan - USA

                        Age (If you want): 20

How Primal are you: I'd say 80% primal, I haven't cut out my daily oatmeal breakfast, but I don't eat any other grains. Also, I often eat legumes. Contrary to Mark's opinion, I don't think legumes are bad for you.

Do you consume dairy: Small amounts of butter on occasion, maybe a little bit of cheese ontop of some spinach, and the occasional whey protein shake.

Do you drink coffee or tea: Green Tea... pretty much daily

Motivator for switching to Primal: Well my main motivator for any lifestyle changes that I make is my skin. I've had acne problems for about 4 years. I've had some success treating it with oral medications, and also some success with topical medications, but I really wanted long-term, sustainable clear skin. Therefore I started eating healthy... I haven't been eating refined grains or hydrogenated oils for a year now, and I've noticed my breakouts were much smaller. Now that I've nearly quit grains completely, my breakouts have slowed down alot. soooo yea, skin.

                        Favorite exercise: Jungle Sprints!

Favorite Primal food: Almond breaded Chicken

Best part about being Primal: The high fat, it tastes so great

Worst part about being Primal: having to turn down grains and pasta when people offer it.

I know that there are people reading this forum that are fully primal, partially primal, and are considering it. I thought that I'd put some questions together to cover these things just to get an idea of who's out there.

                          The Questions:

Your location: A little south of sanity (otherwise known as Gerrards Cross, South Buckinghamshire, England, UK)

Age (If you want): Old enough to probably know better - young enough not to give a damn!

How Primal are you: not very (well, I don't eat grains at all (apart from yesterday when we had a little slip up with some natural yoghurt with berry compote and muesli (this was from a very reputable natural food restaurant chain calle EAT though, so at least it wasn't crap!) generally, I don't eat grains, but I probably consume too much dairy.

Do you consume dairy: Yes (see above)

Do you drink coffee or tea: Coffee? No (decaff very occasionally). Tea? If you're talking 'regular' tea then, no, I don't - but you'd have to kill me to stop me drinking herbal!

Motivator for switching to Primal: Weightloss (still got a few lbs to go - I'll be a UK4-6 again, damnit, I wll!) health reasons (I have PCOS and I'm autistic - I'm also recovering from an ED) and basically because I just believe it makes so much more sense!

Favorite exercise: I get out and walk when I can but, other than that, I don't. I can't afford to go down the gym (I'm on welfare) nor can I afford to buy expensive equipment. I've been suffering from chronic insomnia, so even my walking's been curtailed to the 2 miles into town and back. This is why I'm attempting to IF as much as possible (not managed an overnighter yet, though; been from 5am to 5pm, though, which I don't think's bad...)

Favorite Primal food: Berries, cheese (I LOVE me cheese) eggs and cheese. Did I mention cheese? Oh and berries - especially with cream. Raspberries are my favourite.

Best part about being Primal: I want to say that I feel better generally, but I've not been doing it that long. I have lost 1" off my waist since I began, though!

Worst part about being Primal: Nothing. I test my resolve every now and again, by walking into the local supermarket and past the fresh baked goods. I also have a photo of me at 238lbs to remind me what shovelling carbs down yer gullet does (and I was addicted. Every time I hear Nickelback's Rockstar, it reminds me of the old me (y'know the line 'everybody's got a drug-dealer on speed-dial"? Well I did - and its name was Domino's! I can now say that "My name is Sarah and I've been pizza-free since 2007")

No, that's a lie, there is one thing I do miss: - I have a friend who runs a chocolate and ice-cream shop in town (she makes the ice-cream from scratch, from all natural, all organic/FairTrade ingredients, locally sourced as much as possible, and in 60 flavours, and her youngest makes the chocolates (he's now 21, and I used to babysit him - how old does that make ME feel! ) Before I stumbled across this lifestyle, I'd only tried 6 of them - I still have another 54 to go!

                          Will that do ya...?

Apparently you have to type something here, or it won't post. So I'm typing something here to make sure it posts...
                          La tristesse durera toujours...

                            Age (If you want): 23

How Primal are you: pretty much all the way there.

Do you consume dairy: yes, with my coffee, or an occasional yogurt or bit of cheese.

Do you drink coffee or tea: both

Motivator for switching to Primal: I was looking up protein on the web, stumbled onto this site, and it just made since.

                            Favorite exercise: push ups

                            Favorite Primal food: meat

Best part about being Primal: look good, feel good

Worst part about being Primal: constantly saying, "i don't eat grains" people look at you like your gonna die or something. Funny, but tired of explaining

                            • Your location: Kitsap County WA.

                              Age (If you want): 34

How Primal are you: Id say pretty primal i enjoy using my body iv learned my body gives back what i put into it. Im not perfectly primal but i love too live and live too love. I feel my best when I eat fresh living food while physical using my body the way it was designed to be used.

Do you consume dairy: yes sometimes

Do you drink coffee or tea: both at times

Motivator for switching to Primal: I feel cleaner with a higher level of energy

Favorite exercise: Dancing of any kind

Favorite Primal food: That's a tough questions so many things are good. how could i chose just one?

Best part about being Primal: knowing that I'm putting real food in my body

Worst part about being Primal: I enjoy all types of food. Primal cuts out some of my comfort foods. Then again that's just a chance to get creative ; )

                              • I've been primal since mid-July. Lost 11 pounds in that time, and am the skinniest I've ever been in my life (108lbs, 5ft3). Am actually beginning to wonder how low I'm going to end up? I feel like I'm eating tons, I'm rarely hungry (and eat when I am). My weight loss has slowed, so I'm hoping I'm leveling off.

                                Your location: Redmond, WA.

                                Age (If you want): 46

How Primal are you: Food--85%. Exercise: 50% (the moving slowly is going well, I'm doing active stuff that before I might have avoided (like digging) but I'm not sprinting or lifting much heavy stuff yet. Did primal WOMEN really sprint much or lift heavy stuff? Seems it would be hard to do carrying babies!)

Do you consume dairy: Yes, but I've switched from skim to grass fed whole milk most of the time. And I'm consuming much less than I was.

Do you drink coffee or tea: Both. Mostly decaf black tea, one caffeinated coffee a day, and several caffeinated green teas.

Motivator for switching to Primal: I think I stumbled onto it while googling for diets that help with breakouts. (For the record, Primal hasn't made a difference at all so far!)

Favorite exercise: Walking, especially on trails wearing my Vibrams. FEELING the trail with my feet is still a pure and unexpected joy.

Favorite Primal food: Beef with oxtail gravy

Best part about being Primal: Not WORRYING about food any more. I'm no longer obsessing about what to eat next, what I just ate, whether it was the right ratio of carbs and fat and protein. Not keeping a food log any more. Not worrying about missing a meal, or eating an extra meal. First time in my life when I've eaten well without it being a stress.

Worst part about being Primal: I suppose I've felt the occasional pang of "I can't eat that" as the family has tucked into, say, crepes or chocolate cake, but it's been remarkably infrequent. I very rarely feel deprived at all, and when I do, I usually just have a spoonful of what they have and then it's enough.

Zone diet on and off for several years....worked, but too much focus on exact meal composition
Primal since July 2010...skinniest I've ever been and the least stressed about food
