  • I need your help!!! Obese female in mid 30's / weight loss plateau / carbs

    Morbidly obese, diagnosed with insulin resistance, Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and adrenal fatigue.

    I'm lost... my endo can't help and I can't afford online coaching/consulting...

    How many carbs should I consume for weight loss?

    It would be helpful if we had more information. Height? Weight? Current menu? Food allergies? Have you tried paleo/primal before?

    What were you doing before you had a plateau? If you were dieting.... you may need to take a break and just focus on healthy eating. Perhaps get your health issues controlled and instill a diet of healthy foods, THEN start thinking about creating a calorie deficit.

    The link above is to a book that is one of the best pieces I've seen on what you do between dieting and how to prepare to diet. It's a program I follow and I have never felt better and also lose fat pretty easily on their plan, where as I struggle with anything else. And you can follow it while eating a primal foods diet.

    My neighbors do Whole30 two or three times a year, and they kick it off by cooking 30 entrees in one day. That would be awesome for setting baseline calories/macros if OP is able to do that. I've looked into it, but have a bunch of 15 pound cow parts in my freezer, so I don't have the space to store it. My crockpot and Dutch oven are my friends.

    Pierrette, welcome, and please check in as often as you need. Lots of people here have been here for years and have lots of insights, and others (me included) have been around less long, but are working to be and stay healthy with related issues.

    I would start with a Whole30 approach and keep below 100 gms of carbohydrates daily. You can calculate your daily calorie requirements and track you carbs, protein, fats and calories for free on the Livestrong site. Use portion control and exercise to keep your caloric daily total in a negative balance.

    If I were you, slow your way into it. If you eat a lot of carbs for every meal, the first day eliminate one meal without them. Do that until you are used to it. Then when you used to that, eliminate more.

    If you rush into things you could set yourself up for failure. Set yourself up for success.

    exercise that engages the larger muscles is especially helpful for enabling better insulin response -- think a long walk after dinner kind of thing.

    Have to agree with Urban Forager about being careful with strict carb control with Hashimoto's. Instead of trying to limit carbs to a certain number, you might instead focus on their source, emphasizing nutrient dense, low carb/calorie options like leafy greens and fruits (in moderation) and vegetables that you like, rather than starchy, denser things like potatoes, pasta, rice, peas, bread, corn, oats, etc.

    Focusing on nutrient density with heavily plant-based meals balanced around protein and reasonable amounts of healthy fats means you'll get to eat a large amount of food, provide your body with a great resource of the things it needs to find the best balance it can, and get healthier.

    Are you able to exercise? Any type and amount will help, and insulin resistance in particular will respond well to whatever level of activity you can engage in.

    You should check out The Paleo Mom. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease so you should at least consider the autoimmune protocol. Sarah Ballantyne, the site's author, has Hashimoto's and has written about her struggles.

    Please look into the Altshift diet. It shifts between 5 days of low carb (less than 30g) and 3 days of low fat (less than 40g).
    Extended low carb can really aggravate Hashimoto's.

    You can lose a lot of weight quickly by reducing your carb intake to less than 50 grams. Doing this right away might be difficult though, ease into it by eliminating all grains, fruit juices/pop, table sugars etc...

    Were you diagnoses with type 2 diabetes? Insulin resistance can be reversed with exercise and diet modification.
