    My father has both high blood pressure and high levels of cholesterol, so I'm at risk.

    Does eating a lot of eggs contribute to high levels of cholesterol?

        Eggs are fine. I've been eating at least two dozen a week (which is pretty low for this forum), and all of my heart health indicators are average to above average.

          The more cholesterol you eat, the less your body has to produce.

          The human diet has always contained significant amounts of cholesterol. Restricting or eliminating cholesterol’s intake registers in the body as a “crisis” or “famine” and results in the production of a liver enzyme called HMG Co-A Reductase that in effect then overproduces cholesterol from carbohydrates in the diet. Consuming excess carbohydrates, while decreasing cholesterol intake, guarantees a steady overproduction of cholesterol in the body. The only way to switch this off is to consume an adequate amount of dietary cholesterol (and back off the carbs). In other words, the dietary intake of cholesterol stops the internal production of cholesterol (Schwarzbein).

              Eggs are one of the most perfect foods on earth.

              I eat about 30 a week.

              My chronically high cholesterol is fine - the total is still high - but the ratios are great - my doctor is very happy.

                Studies on dietary cholesterol and cholesterol levels in the body have not conclusively shown that the former effects the latter.

                  Hypothyroidism causes high cholesterol and heart disease. This was observed decades ago; high cholesterol correlates with heart disease. We made the mistake of assuming high cholesterol causes heart disease. Based on this assumption, we were advised to avoid saturated fat and cholesterol, because they can raise serum cholesterol. Vegetable oils like canola oil were recommended instead because they lower serum cholesterol.

                  But vegetable oils do not improve thyroid function, which is what matters. They just lower cholesterol, which modifies a "risk factor" without affecting the actual problem (hypothyroidism). If you're really worried about high cholesterol, you can take more magnesium, which improves thyroid function and thereby lowers cholesterol in a beneficial way.

                  In both the Sydney Diet Heart Study and the corn oil trial by Rose et al, people were given large amounts of vegetable oils while being told to avoid eating cholesterol. The results were exactly what one would expect: their cholesterol levels dropped significantly, but they died more, including death by heart disease. So lowering serum cholesterol by avoiding saturated fat and cholesterol was not beneficial.

                    I'm also at risk for genetically high cholesterol, so I went to see a specialist to get an opinion, and it was indeed too high. Tried to modify my diet in a "traditional" way, by cutting saturated fat, and it went up! Then, I started to cut refined sugar and grains a couple months ago, based on a friend's (who also happens to be a physician) recommendation (prior to discovering MDA). After cutting that stuff and dramatically INCREASING my intake of red meat, butter and cheese, I went back and my LDL was at an all time low, my HDL at an all time high and everything else in the proper range.

                    There seems to be a lot of new research suggesting that fats aren't the problem they once were considered:

                    However, my conclusion about this is twofold: On the one hand, if that is correct (and the evidence is compelling), there's no problem eating grass fed ribeye a couple times a week and raw milk cheese for dessert every night. On the other hand, if people aren't careful about the quality of the fatty foods they eat (hormone/drug-infused cows and dairy, highly processed meats and cheeses), the health consequences will be just as severe, and trans fats are still just as bad as ever.

                      Artbuc - do you know if it was a particular saturated fat that raised your levels? I remember Knifegill posting that coconut caused a huge increase in his cholesterol panel but they dropped back down when he eliminated that food from his diet. I found sev'l articles online that implicated myristic acid as the culprit (it is present in large amounts in coconut). I'm wondering if some of us may be hyper responders to saturated fat...or perhaps only to specific satfats.

                        I assume it was coconut because I was eating it as a staple - Bob's Red Mill shredded and lots of fresh as well, not to mention a fair amount of Nutiva coconut oil. I was on a very high fat, low carb diet with most of the fat coming from coconut. My numbers went back to baseline a few months after I dropped the coconut and reduced starred fats overall.

                          Thanks. I'd been warned about my LDL-P and suspected the coconut after reading of Knifegill's experiment. I cut it out several weeks ago and had a repeat blood draw today and will get the results on the 20th.

                              Again, I advise you to read the posts that Mark has made. It may seem like a shortcut to ask the questions here in the forums, but you'll get a lot (~1600 active users) of different opinions.
