  • how to not lose weight on paleo/primal?

Hi guys -- I was wondering if I could get some advice on how to do paleo without losing weight. I know weight loss usually comes with paleo, but I was doing it for health reasons (chronic pain and fatigue mostly) and while it helped with that, I noticed I went from 118 to 109 which put me so underweight that I skipped a period. I reluctantly went back to eating a SAD diet just for the calories and to get my weight back up but I don't like the way I feel. To get my weight back to normal and keep it normal, I need to be eating approximately 2000-2500 calories a day according to one website I read, and I just can't seem to do it (maybe I'm not hungry enough?). I'm also not physically active really so I know that wasn't really an issue for losing weight.

Just curious if anyone has suggestions on how to keep calories high on a Paleo diet. I know fat is one way but I also have high cholesterol and I know people have different opinions about that but I worry about certain saturated fats still. Also, I didn't really restrict anything other than gluten and other real bad grains (I still ate dairy and sometimes rice and beans). Thanks!

You could replace your weight loss with muscle. There's a lot of good advice here to help you.

I see two mistakes 1) going back to SAD 2) your focus on calories.

Suggestions - 1) return to paleo or our primal version 2) start a muscle building regimen 3) Increase protein and carbs, but the healthy ones.

Look for the Carb Curve on this site and you'll see clearly what level you need to support your weight goal.

Hmm, your situation sounds similar to my daughter's. It's difficult to increase intake when you don't feel hungry and also to build muscle when you are so slight. But maybe a bit more exercise would assist to increase appetite, as long as you don't exercise so hard as to burn off even more energy than you are taking in. Good luck and if you find something that works, please share.

You might find this podcast by Chris Kresser helpful: How to Gain Weight on a Paleo Diet.

Do you take caffeine? It is an appetite suppressant, so cutting back or quitting would probably help you to eat more.

Or you could do what my friend did and search for threads on this forum on how to lose weight and then do the EXACT opposite to what forum members posted as suggestions.

True. Most of the weightloss advice here calls for a drastic reduction of sugar/starch carbohydrates to between 50g-75g per day. Theoretically, the opposite action would benefit someone wanting to gain weight with fat. Unless there are hormonal issues that interfere with the conversion of carbohydrates to fats. Trying it would be worthwhile. If it doesn't yield the results you seek, then some hormonal testing would be wise.

The problem with adding weight with fat storage is that it is difficult to control body composition. It doesn't always get stored where we want it. There is a healthy level of fat storage if stored subcutaneously. Beyond that, you probably will be happier with the results of some muscle addition. It weighs more, provides more health benefits and you can control where it's located more easily.
