Yes, this diet does have a catch.

    I think it depends on each person. I eat paleo/primal most of the time. I occasionally cheat with some milk, cheese, bread or sweets of some kind. I have had no major issues at all. I do get some nasal congestion with certain cheeses and dressings, but that's about it.

    Even though I don't seemed to be bothered by non-primal foods, I still avoid them. I feel healthier overall, especially knowing I am avoiding processed foods and chemicals. I also like knowing that I am not helping any of these corporations profit off selling me crap.

      I never had cheat issues with stuff makin me sick. But I grew up on a big farm so maybe my metabolics weren't all metaviolated when I started this thing.

        Me too! I went off the rails recently and had some (at least home-made) cookies and two (ahem) bagels with cream cheese. I was both hungry and my stomach felt ... something. Not full but stuffed.

        When I changed how I ate, it wasn't a 'I am following The Plan For Primal Living' it was just that I wanted to lose weight and as long as I ate protein I would build muscle and veggies are good but why eat a piece of bread? I was totally in calories out/calories in land. I ended up seeing my doctor because I felt weird all the time. Not hungry, but without my stomach feeling stuffed. I was worried all the meat was stuck in my guts and processing too slowly. Feel free to laugh at me for that one! The word I was missing -- the word missing for people who eat a carb heavy SAD -- was satiated. I had forgotten what that felt like.

        I still have oatmeal (ssh, don't tell anyone! but it's awesome with butter and coconut before a long run). Because I run afterwards I expect to be hungry and I eat usually some eggs or Nik's sticks (beef sticks) afterwards and I'm set until lunch.

        After my bagel experience I just don't want them any more, but I'm sure that'll change some day and I'll just go in knowing it'll seem weird and I should eat extra protein later to feel full properly again. Otherwise it's a downward spiral. But I don't have any other negative effects that would keep me from picking up that second bagel...

        Oh, yeah, and I gained 5 lbs. that weekend of the cookies/bagels. Lost it the next week, but still, as a female it completely freaked me out.

          Thanks for the replies guys, it's interesting to hear how differently people have reacted.

          I agree that this is a way of life rather than a diet. I was never really a SAD eater before, I knew all about healthy fats and hidden sugars, and ate plenty of meat/eggs/fish/vegetables, it's just that I ate chocolate and crisps/chips as well cos I was addicted and depressed. It was not a great leap of knowledge taking on Primal, it was simply a leap of willpower to stick to it long enough to see an encouraging effect (for me it was only about a week before quitting bread and milk caused a dramatic effect).

          I am happy to eat this way forever, but it's unrealistic to say that you can avoid cheating. I'm not a cavewoman, I'm a modern woman who would like to eat out now and then without having to rudely interrogate the chef about his choice of ingredients, and have a slice of pizza now and then when my OH has ordered a takeaway pizza and there's nothing in the fridge and I'm too tired to go to the supermarket.

          As to the psycological/adjustment argument, I would say that, no, this is a dramatic physical reaction which is telling me my gut is not healed yet. Each time this has happened, it has been the day after a gluten/sugar cheat meal. And we're not talking a bit of bloating and a squishy poo. We're talking, bedridden with pain, going to the loo about 20 times in a day, and the first time it happened it was so terrifyingly unlike normal diarrhea I assumed I had some nasty bug akin to dysentery and was planning to go to the hospital if I got dehydrated!

          I also don't think I'm being a hypochondriac because I don't take any medication apart from an occasional painkiller and I hadn't needed to go to a doctor for 5 years until now, even when I had a suspected case of swine flu in 2010 I just stayed in bed for a week! I have to be seriously ill and worried before I'll bother going to a doctor!

            Well, pizza gave me pretty bad cramps anyway, and combine it with ice cream and I would be pretty miserable. So I'm okay with not eating it. I don't even know why it caused me so much distress. I can eat cheese just fine without gastrointesitnal problems. Eating something like bagels and cream cheese never caused me distress. Something about pizza did.

              I could never understand what people see in pizza. All the "Italian" dishes they make here in America have that weird combination of cheap cheese, bad fats and rancid tomato sauces that coupled with bad breads and horrid deli meats or cheap chuck beef is probably enough to bend a Terminator in two. I guess maybe I just cheat on the wrong foods to cause me any illness. I remember that the first and only time I tried KFC chicken at the ~age 24 and I was sick on my stomach for 2 days.... I grew up outside North America, and what people here seem to consider treats worthy of cheating are like... WHY? Pizzas, lasagnas, meatballs with tomato sauce, battered fried items, I find them just not tasty at all. Salty, greasy, yucky kind of greasiness, you know, sour too, from tomato sauces. The only time I wanted McDonald's fires was when I was pregnant. For a while I had a taste for McNuggets, but after having them stale a couple of times, way back when I was nowhere near paleo, I stopped wanting them.... Fast food just tastes bad to me, I dunno why.

              I cheat on jam, home-made ice-cream, chocolate, PB, a jelly bean or a gummy (though not lately, I find them totally disgusting) and for the most part - fruit. I was just making ice-cream yesterday and licked some of the doulce de leche I was making for it from the condensed cream, and I was shocked at how unappealing it was. When I was growing up, we used to dip white bread into condensed milk or smother doulce de leche over it and mom and I could polish away the whole can. Jams also starting to disappoint even home made ones. I just not finding the kick from the sweets like I used to, apart from fruit.

              I did not even cheat on bread lately, but before pumpernickel used to be a huge downfall (with mustard....) and from grains buckwheat and millet. And I don't even want that any more after carbing up on rice for Ultimate Diet 2.0.

              Fruits, nuts and cheese, those are basically the only thing that I eat for pleasure nowadays. My biggest problem is still overeating & being hungry, so I guess, I really need to work on *seriously* dropping fruit.

              Because, I guess, if you consider being unnaturally hungry 'a hurt', the fruit hurt me... right? Crazy? Hypochondriac?

                You know at one point I realized that almost everything I ever ate was a combination of bread, cheese and tomatoes.

                Pizza: bread, cheese, tomato sauce + toppings
                Burritos: tortilla, cheese, salsa + beans
                Tacos: tortilla, cheese, hot sauce + meat
                Spaghetti: pasta, cheese, tomato sauce + meat or meat balls or something
                Hamburger: bun, cheese, ketchup + meat and toppings

                At one point I thought that if all I did was stop eating bread, cheese and tomatoes in all forms I would get healthy. And I tried it for a while, too but like most things, I didn't stick to it.

                  So, you think that eliminating fruit is not going go well for me? I have the same suspicion to be honest, but that's the only thing I did not manage to cope with. I think I am getting better, at least I am starting to find fruit a little less appealing. Until watermelon comes out of the fridge on a hot-hot day. Argh.

                    Leida, where did you grow up, and where in America do you live? I assure you, not all of America has such horrible "Italian" food, though most Italian-American foods aren't exactly on my plan nowadays. A properly prepared pizza is a work of art, and the same can be said of pasta sauce or burger. However, if all you exposed yourself to before going Primal was cheap fast-foods and chain pizzerias, of course you were gonna find it a bit lacking. Also, keep in mind most of us grew up on those foods.

                    As for being sensitive to foods we used to rely on, perhaps. I had some pizza(not even great pizza, unfortunately) a month, month and a half ago, had the same problem as the OP. I don't touch bread and I don't touch pasta, so I'm figuring it had to be gluten. There's the possibility that our gut fauna have changed, since we no longer eat the same foods, thereby causing us discomfort. There's also the possibility that the foods we don't eat, we don't eat for a reason, and we lost tolerance to gluten, lectin, etc.

                    In the first scenerio, feeling a bit full for a while after eating seems reasonable. The second, I'd expect we'd see bigger reactions, like lethargy, diarhea, gut pain, joint pain, weakness, etc.

                      My doctor says it's psychosomatic that we feel ill after eating things that we perceive to be bad for us. I'm totally unconvinced by that.

                      I feel sorry for anyone who has grown up on fast food and processed food, myself.

                        In unrelated news, we got rid of our TV, and I now get mesmerised by ads on a TV at someone else's house.

                        I've lose my 'resistance' to tune them out.
                        Disclaimer: I eat 'meat and vegetables' ala Primal, although I don't agree with the carb curve. I like Perfect Health Diet and WAPF Lactofermentation a lot.

                          I am scared to death to cheat. My sister cheated on the diet and experienced severe stomach pains and ultimately went off the diet. I have outlasted all of my "competitors" so far.

                            I can get away with eating crap for about a day and a half. After that...stinky gas, bloating, bad skin and an expanding waist-line.
