• Recipes for canned salmon?

I admit to not being a fan of meat, any kind of meat, in a can. But, canned salmon is wild and inexpensive, so I thought I'd give it a try.

The color threw me off at first; it's just flesh-colored rather than pink or red.

I tried to make "patties" out of it using an egg, some spices, and about a teaspoon of coconut flour, pan fried in some butter. It's just ok. It doesn't taste like salmon at all though.

Anyone have any secrets??

Tara Tootie has a recipe in her journal for Salmon Salad:

Salmon salad

1 small can salmon

zest of 1/2 a lwmon

juice of 1/2 a lemon

few pinches of dill

BACON MAYO!!! (lil_earthmomma's recipe [])

Mix and eat!

I mix canned salmon with mayo and throw on top of my BAS. Also like to mix it with olives, cucumber, avocado, onion, tomato and either olive oil or mayo. Then again, I love canned salmon so would be happy to eat it straight out of a can

Hmm I have a can of salmon sitting in my kitchen and not sure what to do with it either... I hope other people have good recipes too!

1 tsp garlic

Sounds pretty good... I need to get some of that liquid smoke. The last bottle we had dropped and broke and our pantry smelled like smokey meat for like 2 weeks.

This is my absolute favorite salmon-cake recipe. We make it everytime we have guests & everyone raves about it:

We don't use the bread-crumbs (not needed) and make our own mayonnaise (just whip up olive oil, egg-yolk, lemon juice & touch of mustard in a blender). Also, even tho' the recipe calls for fresh salmon we usually make it w/ canned.

My breakfast salad today:

4 cups spinach

1 apple (gasp!), chopped

1/4 cup pomegranate seeds

handful of walnuts

1 7-oz can salmon (Kirkland brand is my favorite)

Olive oil, lemon juice, and black pepper dressing

Just wanted to second the Kirkland brand. Costco sells these in packs of 3 cans for 9.99 around here. Used to come in packs of 5 cans, but I guess they changed that...

I love to mix it with bruschetta and put it on top of a big spinach salad. I usually take this for lunch so by the time you eat it the brushetta has sort of braised the spinach. Trader Joes has a great bruschetta with all real ingredients but it's super easy to make fresh also.

@ Raphael: Yes. I think the cans might be bigger. Same ingredients and everything, but different label.

I have been making a salad that has:

home grown lettuce (any lettuce other than iceburg would do)

chopped tomatoes

chopped onion

canned salmon

shredded cheese

balsamic vinegar

small chopped brocolli

It's awesome, fast, and cheap. The balsamic vinegar and salmon combo is amazing.

For those of you that do dairy this one is great, filling and load with protein, great lunch box item.. Enjoy!

Salmon cheese ball
2 cans salmon ( I use kirkland boneless cans)
couple dashes liquid smoke
1 pk original cream cheese
1/2 diced onion
1/2 t celery salt
1/2 t celery seed
couple stocks diced celery

mix by hand
form a log or a ball shape( I usually press it into a bowl and then turn on to a plate)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans pressed into roll ( I slip my hand into a ziplock baggie to press in walnuts)

serve with veggie sticks, veggie chips or pork rinds (oppsies for a sandwich)

For more of a thinner dip you can add a couple splashes of milk or cream and stir in the nuts or sprinkle on top

best refrigerated for at least a 4 hrs for the flavors to mix

I also make a pretty good "smoked" salmon dip. It has dairy. Use celery and other hard veggies to dip.

I use fat free cream cheese because I would rather choose what are my fats than have the dairy industry force omega-6 fats down my throat.

15 ounces Canned salmon, bones and skin removed
1 8-oz package Fat free cream cheese (you can always add a bit of coconut or olive oil to make this more satisfying). **
1 tsp Lemon juice, raw
1 teaspoon Spices, onion powder
1/4 teaspoon Spices, garlic powder
1/4 tsp Salt (to start)
1/4 teaspoon Black pepper
1/4 tsp to a bit more Wright's Liquid Smoke (tricky to blend well, try adding it to the cream cheese first which gets mixed in well). Don't over use.

Blend everything well and taste for saltiness. If not enough salt (remember CW folks usually dip crackers), add a bit more.

Optional: more black pepper and/or cayenne or chipotle powder (smoked aged jalapeno) just to spice things up.

**EDIT** I just remembered maybe only use half of the cream cheese.... :-( sorry!!!
